The cycle of erosion was a model for stream erosion and landscape development proposed by William Morris Davis in the late 19th century. Davis’ Stages in the fluvial cycle of erosion published in 1909 defined a young, mature, and old sequence in the development of river valleys and the landscape the rivers were eroding. From a theoretical perspective, under the conditions Davis specified (an episode of uplift followed by a long period of no further uplift, erosion dominated by fluvial processes, and no major sea-level, climate or tectonic change), the postulated cycle of erosion is exactly what would happen, as physical models testify. Davisian cycle The orderly series of stages through which it is suggested that land-forms pass from their initial uplift as hills or mountains until erosion finally reduces them to plains. The cycle of erosion, as envisioned by Davis, has its initial stage at a time when the landmass is rapidly elevated by internal earth forces, followed by a very long period of tectonic quiescence.

He gave the cycle of erosion in 1899 based on the erosion pattern of American mountainous Valleys. As per Davis, in the beginning, there was a flat surface and due to endogenic force sudden landmass uplifted then the process of landform development started. 2017-10-05 · Davis Cycle of Erosion Posted on 5 Oct 2017 5 Oct 2017 by SAim ßhAtt The concept of geographical cycle of erosion recognises the possibility of obliteration of relief, or planation, during the life history of a landscape, by process of erosion, occurring in a sequence of orderly changes, finally reducing the landscape relief to a minimum.

William Moris Davis (1850-1934) was a prominent American geographer who founded the Association of American Geographers in 1904. He also put forward a theory of the cycle of erosion. The main points of his theory are as under: A cycle of erosion would affect all landscapes. The cycle consists of three stages. Youth Stage, Mature … Read more

CYCLE OF EROSION PROPOUNDED BY DAVIS AND PENK work . so the balance between these two activities in a cyclic process is known as the cycle of erosion . Comparison between Davis and Penck model of geographic cycle • According to Davis , upliftment finished before degradation starts where as Penck said upliftment and degradation starts together as soon as the landmass come above the sea level. The ‘cycle’ had been introduced by Lawson in 1894, but Davis was to use it as his central theme.

Davis considered humid temperate areas as the most normal case for fluvial cycle of erosion but this claim is debatable. The normal cycle of erosion begins with the upliftment of any landmass with reference to sea level.

The theory of the cycle of erosion put forward by W.M. Davis has been criticized by many geographers because of the following reasons: W. Penck does not accept the three stages of the cycle of erosion viz., the youth stage, the mature, and the old stage. In the opinion of several German Geologists,
